Ekaro! I tried pretty much every hairstyle available
Ekaro! I tried pretty much every hairstyle available to black women but eventually felt most comfortable with my natural hair. Long before African Americans like Colin Kaepernick and Angela Davis popularised black hair as a political statement, Marcus Garvey said “remove the kink from your mind, not your hair.” Over the four centuries of African enslavement, the texture of our hair and our hairstyles became yet another target of racist, dehumanising tactics. Sadly, many of us have ingested these views to the point where we still do not consider natural African hair as professional or acceptable in certain spheres. While people are free to express themselves as they feel comfortable, I add my voice to those in the African community who celebrate their hair and wear it as their own form of protest.
Hair is my resistance.
