Sometimes I have breakfast as my ancestors
Sometimes I have breakfast as my ancestors would have – saltfish with provision and a cup of tea. They would eat like this to build themselves up for a long day of work in the fields.
My grandmother was the first person I saw eating food in the morning; she also her hands sometimes. I used to ask her “granny why you eating food this hour? Why you using your hands?” Now I understand.
When I’m low I try to summon the strength and resilience of my ancestors. When I’m low I remember if they gave up, we would not be here. Give thanks for the lessons. Give thanks for the African blood coursing through our veins. Give thanks. Ase
