As they waited to be put on ships from Ghana in West Africa, our ancestors were subjected to rape, disease and all manner of dehumanisation at forts like Elmina. In the Chapel, the governor and his soldiers prayed. From Africa, the vast majority was brought to the Caribbean. Many perished during the long journey, their bodies casually thrown overboard into the ocean. Those who survived, fought and resisted enslavement. Today we honour their traditions, such as the Anansi stories of the Akan people, the beauty of the Kente fabric and powerful African drum rhythms. Give thanks, we honour their determination and faith over the centuries. Give thanks, Black Lives Matter. Ase
