The devil masquerade from TT is historically portrayed by covering the body in black paint. Originally called Jab Molassie, the black substance represents the boiling molasses that our enslaved ancestors would sometimes fall into during the sugar making process. The screams that are typical of this masquerade recall the screaming and pain as they perished. The blue version was created in Paramin due to the unavailability of other materials, but it’s portrayal is no less frightening.
