Michelle De Leon is the founder of World Afro Day

Michelle De Leon is the founder of World Afro Day, celebrated today September 15th. (Picture: Kacper Rudolf). In an interview with the online publication Metro UK she said “Decades of discrimination have become embedded in the education system… there is a lack of acceptance in some schools for African children and hair grooming that dates back thousands of years. This is not fashion, it’s more fundamental than that – school hair policies harass and harm our children. This about equality and justice and the time for action is now.”
If you can believe it, in TT, we still have issues with African hairstyles, textures and concepts of beauty. This is the case in the world of fashion, the school system and the world of business. While it is indeed much better now, the problem is that ingrained prejudice against black hair and other forms of African culture still exist . Your hair is another form of resistance to systemic racism. Wear it proudly and do not remain silent in the face of ignorance or disrespect to our culture and heritage.
Happy World Afro Day!
